The crisis provoked by Hamas’s brutal attacks on Israel last Oct. 7 was followed by the launch of a large Israeli military operation in Gaza, with the intent of defeating the Palestinian organization and preventing the possibility of new threats against the security of the Jewish state.
The prolonged conflict and the high cost of civilian casualties, however, have led to a complex evolution of the crisis, accompanied, moreover, in Israel by continuing high political tensions against the government of Prime Minister Netanyahu.
The conflict in Gaza has also been accompanied by the re-emergence of an increasingly pronounced regional conflict, involving Lebanon, Syria and the Red Sea, with the risk of a possible escalation that could also involve Iran in the future.
Although it seems clear that all the actors in this crisis are adamant that a broader escalation should not be allowed to emerge, the dynamics of the crisis itself are gradually growing in intensity, with the risk of a possible traumatic outcome that no one wishes for, but at the same time no one can contain.
IGS, CARI and Atlantic Council intend to discuss the evolution of this crisis, highlighting its perception from three different continents, making considerations on its current dimension and identifying the variables that could determine its developments.
Paulo Botta (CARI), Roberto Menotti (Aspen Institute Italia), Karim Mezran (Atlantic Council) and Nicola Pedde (IGS) will discuss the issue.
